Why must I send my child to school?
The law in NSW (Education Act 1990) states that all children between the ages of six and
fifteen years are required to attend school regularly. It is the responsibility of parents or caregivers to make sure that their children attend school everyday.
Must I send my child to school every day?
YES unless:
_ your child is too sick to go to school
_ your child has been injured
_ your child has to attend a special religious ceremony
_ your child has an infectious illness for example, chicken pox, mumps or measles
_ there is a serious family situation which requires their involvement.
Why is regular attendance at school important?
Attending school every day makes learning easier for your child and helps build and maintain friendships with other children.
If students miss the basic skills in the early years of school, they may have problems later on. Regular attendance at school will help your child to succeed in later life.
Attendance requirements for compulsory school-aged students
Please do not keep your child away from school for:
_ birthdays
_ pension day
_ minding other children
_ hair cuts
_ interpreting for other family members.
Always try to make children’s appointments with people like dentists or doctors before or after school.
What should I do if our family is going on holiday in school time?
Families should try to arrange holidays during school vacation periods.
If you can only arrange your family holiday during school time, you should inform the school principal in advance and request permission for your child to be absent.
You can ask the school to provide homework that can be completed while your child is absent
What should I do if my child has to stay away from school?
It is important to let the school know when your child will be away and why your child was absent.
The parent or caregiver should telephone the school or provide a written note addressed to the school explaining the child’s absence.
Children leaving school grounds
This is not encouraged, but if there is a valid reason and it is supported by a note from a parent/guardian, then permission may be given. Please ensure you come to the office to sign your children in or out of school.
Lunch at school
Children are expected to remain at school for lunch. We ask for co-operation in this matter.
My child won’t go to school what should I do?
You should contact the principal as soon as possible to discuss the problem and ask for help.
The principal may ask a Home School Liaison Officer to contact you to discuss the issue.
The role of the home school liaison officer
Parents have the major responsibility for maintaining the regular attendance of their children at school. Home School Liaison Officers provide additional support to students, parents and schools to encourage the full participation of all students in schooling.
In case of emergency due to illness or accident, parents will be contacted. If in the event you cannot be contacted, the school will seek medical assistance. Please advise us in writing of any medical information we may need to know. The school does belong to Group Ambulance Scheme, covering the cost of this service.
Medication at School
On no account should children have medication at school without our knowledge. Any medication should be passed to the class teacher, with written instructions. There is a Deed of Indemnity form which must be filled out prior to the child being given medication at school. Asthma "puffers" are exempted from this requirement.
This service is provided through the Commonwealth bank. Application forms are available at school. Banking is collected each Wednesday.
All children are expected to wear a school uniform. A hat or cap is essential all year, for protection from the sun.
The wearing of a school uniform enables a child to feel a part of the school and more comfortable with fellow pupils. Our aim is to develop spirit and pride in the school as part of the Eden Community.

UNIFORM CHANGES
The school is changing its uniform over the next few years. These changes will not be immediate but for the start of the 2010 school year. Summer shorts to remain same, winter trousers to change to grey for both boys and girls and sports shorts to be black for both boys and girls. At the moment the shirts are to remain the same but various options are still being discussed. Changes include one shirt only to be worn for sports and school days. Mr Mussett has been modelling a new design using both colours which is popular with the children or just one colour, either white or royal blue. We are looking into storage of second hand uniforms and volunteers to wash, sort and resell the clothes.

It is important that students bring a Library bag, with their name on it to Library classes. These bags help to protect books and help students identify where they are. A cotton bag from Woolworths, IGA or some other place is fine. Pillowslips can also be used as Library bags. The best type of Library bag is a strong plastic bag, which can be purchased from Target, Big W or some newsagents in the stationery section. Brian and Jessica are showing the plastic bags that we recommend.
FREE 24 HOUR TELEPHONE COUNSELLING FOR PARENTS

Starting the school year can present parents and families with a multitude of unique challenges to family life and new experiences for children. Parents face issues such as helping children adapt to new teachers and class environments and routines, work through issues with peers as well as help children to manage out of school activities, homework, chores and spare time. Children are often tired at the beginning of the school year as they adjust to their new environment. Behaviour difficulties, irritability and emotional outbursts are just some of the symptoms of children dealing with new and exhausting experiences.
Parent Line provides professional help by experienced and qualified counsellors on a wide range of issues from step parenting, to managing difficult behaviours, to dealing with at risk adolescents and anything in between.
Our counsellors can talk through issues and help parents come up with new strategies that suit their parenting style and family, send out information as well as refer them to services and resources in their local community.
Parent Line is a DoCS funded service that can provide confidential, professional, free counselling, information and referral to parents of children aged 0- 18 across NSW.
Parent Line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Phone 132055
