SPORT 2008
2008 Eden Public School Swimming Carnival
Our district swimmers represented us with distinction at the Zone Carnival at Candelo. Our 18 competitors were a credit to the school once again. They competed to the best of their ability and never stopped trying. Their behaviour was great and they all adopted the “right attitude.” It was pleasing to see our Senior Girls relay team come a great first place.
Sally, Maddison, and Georgia travelled to Dapto and competed in the Senior Girl's relay at the Regional Swimming Carnival. They tried their very best and finished 6th out of 32 teams and made a personal best by 9 seconds.

Swimming Trophy
Mr John Pelling, manager of our local swimming pool presented a perpetual swimming trophy to the school this year. It is a wonderful trophy that our children will be competing for at our annual swimming carnivals for many years to come.
On Wednesday 7th May 2008 our girls travelled to Merimbula to play against the Merimbula team. It was a very close game with Eden victorious 16 to 11. Congratulations to Mrs Kelly and to the parents who came and supported the team by transporting them to the venue, coaching, scoring and cheering. We appreciate you all. Finally, congratulations girls, for an excellent game. You were focused and fantastic! We were very proud of you!

The first round of the Tony Lockett Shield State Knockout competition was held at Pambula Sport's Complex on 27 July 2007. Four schools took part - Eden Public School, Merimbula Public School, Pambula Public School and Tathra Public School. Unfortunately we lost we all games but we did our best and had fun. Ben Brumby kicked the only goal for our team. At the completion of the match, we had a sausage sizzle with free drinks. The weather was great even if our game results weren't.

On the 18th June, the Eden Netball team travelled to Bega to compete in the first 3 rounds of the knockout competition. Our girls have been learning the skills of netball since the beginning of 2007. They lost the first two rounds but won the third round. They have improved greatly in their skills and display wonderful sportsmanship at all times. They are great ambassadors for the school.

The Gala Day was held on Wednesday, 6 June 2007, at Pambula Sporting Complex. It was organised by the CRL (Country Rugby League) and ARL (Australian Rugby League) development. Here are some of the student's thoughts about the day.
Oliver - I liked playing Rugby League because it was really fun and I really like Rugby League.

Ryan - I liked it when I played for Team A.

Corey - The Gala Day was a great football and I tackled someone.
Brad - We missed a day of school and played three games of tackle.
Trae - I got a couple of runs in each match.
Jaydyn - I liked it when we beat St Joey's because they thought they would flog us
Dyllan - At the Gala Day I scored against Eden non-competitive team and we played like a great team.
Josh - We got to play as a team and play for fun.
Ben - I scored two tries and a goal

In spite of their best efforts our soccer boys were defeated 4-1 by Pambula Thursday 24 May. The boys tried hard but Pambula were too good for them on the day. Well done Mrs. Kelly for managing the team and well done boys for giving the game your best effort.
Thank you also to Noel ‘Nipper Aucote for refereeing and Wendy Love for washing the jumpers and taking photos.

The Eden Primary School cricket team defeated Pambula Primary School in the NSW PSSA State Knockout. This was a round one match, and the team will now go on to meet Bermagui, in the next round, early term two.
Eden won the toss and elected to bat, compiling a competitive total of 8 for 95 after their allotted 25 overs. Jaydn Spivey was top scorer for Eden with 33 runs, and was well supported by Nicholas Curtis, and Lachlan Rooney.

The Eden bowlers led by Oliver Veness-Pride, Korey Leslie and Mark Grey went on to dismiss the Pambula team for 73 runs. Although there were a couple of dropped catches, the fielding was first class.
Overall the boys acquitted themselves extremely well, representing Eden Public School honourably.
Match result:
Eden 8 / 95 Jaydn 33
runs
Defeated Pambula 73 Korey 2 / 11
Mark 2 / 8
Oliver 2

Rugby League Four players from the Cronulla Sharks visited our school Term 1, 2007. Matt Schuber, the Public Relation's member introduced David, Cameron and Isaac. They talked to us about nutrition and asked us what we had for breakfast and lunch. Josh, one of our students was asked to try and get the ball out of Cameron's hands and he had a hard job doing so. Ryan, another student passed the ball around his body 25 times, whereas David only did it 21 times - and I think he cheated. Students were able to ask the players a lot of questions such as, "What do you do besides football?" Some of the answers were, "Playing golf, soccer, bike-riding, table-tennis or the beach." They asked us to name 15 other sports then as a reward, each student would be presented with a signed poster. It was easy and good fun. westmont shield Eden Primary School Rugby League Monday, 30 April, the Eden Primary School Rugby League team played Pambula Primary School in the NSW PSSA Westmont Shield State Knockout. Whilst the boys tried hard throughout the game, the Pambula team were too committed in both attack and defence for the Eden team, running out comfortable winners. The first half was very disappointing, as the team completed only 3 full sets of tackles, which allowed the Pambula side far too much possession. As a result our defence became tired, enabling Pambula’s strike players plenty of room to move. The second half began much brighter when Josh scored, after a typical aggressive run by Mark. Tyrone and Nick were showing good signs with the ball, and Ben, who never stopped for the whole game, and Andrew were making good charges up field. Josh was busy at dummy half and young Ollie created a chance out wide that was just covered by the Pambula defence. The lack of possession in the first half soon began to affect the Eden side, and the staunch defence of the Pambula side held fast the Eden raids. In the end the Pambula team scored a couple of late tries to blow the score out even further. Whilst the team is now out of the Westmont Shield, all the boys are looking forward to the ARL Gala Day on the 6th June, to show their true spirit. Thanks once again to all the parents who assisted us with transport, especially Jenny who also ran the water bottles, and Mark who ran a linesman’s job. GALA DAYS Information regarding the Gala Days, held at Pambula for Stage 2 and Stage 3, which includes tag league for the girls, will be distributed early term two. Dates for years 5/6 are to be confirmed, however will be in late May to early June.

Four players from Carlton Football Club visited us Term 1. Jordan Russell (20), Mark Austin (17), Ross Young (23) and Ryan Houlihan (25). Ryan has played 142 games with Carlton. Students asked questions and found out that Carlton is televised every game. The players play at the MCG, Telstra Dome or travel interstate to matches. There is a squad of 40 players. Twenty two are selected each week and 18 at a time get to play. Three of the players were born in small country towns. Jordan was born in Adelaide. The players used to barrack for other teams - Ross - Essendon; Mark - Hawks; Jordan - Adelaide Crows; Ryan - Collingwood. They all barrack for Carlton now. Eden
Primary School Cricket 27/4/07
The Eden Primary School cricket team travelled to Pambula to play Bermagui in the delayed Brian Taber Shield match last Friday. Bermagui won the toss and elected to bat first. It was soon apparent that their openers were of a very high standard; and our bowlers struggled to make a breakthrough. A couple of uncharacteristic dropped catches enabled them to amass a substantial opening stand of 64, before Ollie made the initial breakthrough. As is often the case, one wicket can change the nature of the game. The Eden bowlers, led by Ollie with 3 wickets for the match, soon cleaned up the rest of the opposing batters for a respectable total of 92. The Eden batting did not get off to a great start with captain Brad caught out in the deep when the score was only 9. Lachlan Rooney and Nick Curtis offered some stiff resistance for awhile adding a further 20 runs until, player of the day Ollie joined Lachlan. These two set alight the innings and when drinks were taken Eden was back in the match.
Well done to the Eden squad who played in the right spirit, and tried their hardest. Ollie was by far our best player on the day, with Nick and Lachlan both showing they have a lot to offer any cricket side. Our thanks to all the parents who have provided us with transport during the Brian Taber Shield, and to Mark for officiating at the match last Friday. Without your support all these extra curricula activities are not possible, and we greatly appreciate your involvement.
